Nuremberg stadium renovation faces delays due to budget freeze
The planned full reconstruction of the Max-Morlock-Stadion in Nuremberg faces significant delays following a municipal budget freeze. Although the Nuremberg City Council unanimously approved the preferred renovation plan in July 2026, the city's current financial constraints, driven by declining trade tax revenues and rising expenditures, have disrupted the original timeline.
Mayor Marcus König indicated that a time shift is necessary because the city cannot currently afford the project. The estimated costs for the renovation range between 260 million and 280 million euros. A sustainable financing concept must still be developed between the city, 1. FC Nürnberg, and the Free State of Bavaria to ensure that future stadium revenues can cover interest and principal payments.
The previous schedule, which envisioned construction beginning in 2028 with completion for the 2031/32 season, is no longer considered feasible. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the ability of 1. FC Nürnberg to contribute its expected 30 million euros to the project.
