Nurse Matteo Nocera faces homicide trial in Italy
A trial is underway in the Assize Court regarding 44-year-old nurse Matteo Nocera, who is accused of homicide following the death of 83-year-old patient Antonio Rivola at the Mazzolani Vandinidi Argenta Hospital.
Prosecutors allege that Nocera administered Esmeron, a potent muscle relaxant used for intubation, to the patient without therapeutic purpose or necessary artificial respiration. Nocera faces additional charges including mistreatment of various patients through the use of sedatives, injury, interruption of public service, fraud, and the unauthorized practice of medicine. The defense maintains the defendant's innocence, stating there is no proof the drug was administered.
The court has admitted 35 witnesses, with the current phase of the trial involving the testimony of investigators from the Carabinieri.
