Nurul Izzah Anwar steps down as PKR deputy president, takes temporary leave

Nurul Izzah Anwar, deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), formally requested to resign from the post to pursue further studies. The party’s Central Leadership Council (MPP) declined the resignation and instead granted her a temporary leave of absence, effective after the PKR National Congress 2026, with the end date to be announced later.

During her leave, Vice President Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will assume the duties of deputy president, while Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari will continue as PKR’s election director. Despite the leave, Nurul Izzah will still officiate the PKR Women and Youth (AMK) congress on 14 August 2026. The MPP also approved the registration of 3,533 new party members between 12 July and early August 2026.

Nurul Izzah affirmed she will remain a PKR member and support the party’s agenda, stating, “I decided to embark on a new path by pursuing further studies rooted in serving the people, which is not necessarily tied to the realm of politics.”
