Nusrat Osman rescued in Malawi after police shootout
Nusrat Osman, a 47-year-old British national, has been rescued following a six-day kidnapping in Blantyre, Malawi. The rescue operation, conducted on the outskirts of the city in the Mpemba-Chadzunda area, involved an intense exchange of gunfire between the Malawi Police Service and the suspected abductors.
While initial police reports suggested four suspects were killed, Inspector General Richard Luhanga later clarified that two individuals died in the shootout: 43-year-old Mozambican Marcolino Munguambe and 44-year-old Malawian Limbani Anthony. The suspects were reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle and a pistol.
During the operation, Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira sustained gunshot wounds. He is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. Osman, an auditor originally from Leicester, was reunited with her family after being taken to a hospital for medical and mental health assessments. Authorities noted that no ransom demands had been made during her captivity.
