Nutcracker syndrome identified as cause of pediatric abdominal pain

Prof. Dr. Cihangir Akgün, a pediatric nephrology specialist at Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital, has warned that unexplained chronic abdominal pain, left-sided flank pain, and blood in the urine in children may be symptoms of Nutcracker syndrome.

This rare condition occurs when the renal vein is compressed between major abdominal vessels, creating a shape similar to a nutcracker. The condition is more frequently observed in thin, growing children. Symptoms can include visible or microscopic hematuria, protein leakage, and in males, varicocele, while in females, it may be associated with pelvic pain.

Diagnosis typically involves Doppler ultrasound, with MR angiography or CT scans used when necessary. While the pressure on the vein may decrease and the condition resolve naturally as a child gains weight, some cases may require surgical intervention. Experts advise that children presenting with these symptoms should be evaluated by a pediatric nephrology specialist.
