Nutri-Score labeling faces pressure in France amid mandatory adoption calls

The Nutri-Score nutritional labeling system in France is facing significant economic and political pressure as calls for mandatory adoption grow. Because the system remains voluntary, an economic divide has emerged within the food sector. Early adopters such as Carrefour, Monoprix, and Leclerc have seen increased consumer loyalty and a 12% rise in aisle traffic between 2020 and 2025, while products with A or B ratings have gained 18% market share since 2020.

Conversely, companies that abstain from labeling maintain nutritional opacity, which some analysts estimate creates a €2.5 billion cost for the French food sector due to information asymmetry.

Adding to this tension, a citizen petition calling for mandatory Nutri-Score labeling on all food products has surpassed 100,000 signatures on the French National Assembly's official platform. Supported by 79 health and consumer organizations, including the National Academy of Medicine, the initiative seeks to prioritize public health over the economic interests of agribusiness. The petition has been referred to the Social Affairs Commission, and if it reaches 500,000 signatures, it could trigger a direct debate in the National Assembly.
