Nutrient absorption and effective food combinations

Nutrient absorption is significantly influenced by how certain foods are combined. High-fiber foods, including vegetables like spinach and carrots, legumes, whole grains, and certain nuts, may cause the body to eliminate Vitamin D more quickly. To optimize absorption, it is recommended to wait a few hours after consuming high-fiber foods before taking Vitamin D supplements, or to consume Vitamin D with fatty foods such as salmon, avocado, or egg yolks.

Additionally, certain plant sterols found in cooking oils and nuts may compete with Vitamin D for absorption pathways. While studies in non-human subjects suggest these sterols can reduce Vitamin D levels by up to 36 percent, more research is needed to confirm this effect in humans.

Effective nutritional pairings include:

Vitamin D and Calcium: Vitamin D aids the absorption of calcium, which is essential for bone health. • Potassium and Salt: Consuming potassium-rich fruits and vegetables can help manage salt intake and promote diuresis. • Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid: These nutrients work together to support cellular function and life.
