Nutrient absorption and the differences between vitamin D2 and D3
Health experts are clarifying the distinctions between different forms of vitamins and the complexities of supplement formulation. While vitamin D2 and D3 are essentially the same compound with slight chemical differences in their side chain structures, they are sourced differently. Vitamin D2 is often found in mushrooms and fortified plant-based milks or cereals, whereas vitamin D3 is found in fatty fish and egg yolks.
Regarding supplement design, experts note that combining all nutrients into a single pill is often impractical due to physical tablet limits and nutrient interactions. For instance, iron and calcium can interfere with each other's absorption. Additionally, different nutrients require varying dosages and specific conditions for optimal uptake, such as vitamins D and K requiring fat-containing meals for better absorption. Consequently, many advanced systems use multi-component approaches to provide targeted nutrients at appropriate dosages and schedules.
