Nutrition advice on iron absorption and breakfast balance

Nutritional experts have highlighted how dietary habits and timing can significantly impact nutrient absorption and satiety.

Regarding iron supplementation, consuming coffee too close to iron intake can reduce absorption. Coffee contains polyphenols that can bind with non-heme iron—the type found in plant-based foods and many supplements—making it less available to the body. To maximize benefits, experts suggest consuming iron supplements and coffee at least one to two hours apart. While heme iron from animal products is less affected, timing remains a key strategy for those managing iron levels.

Additionally, nutritionist Oliver Goble notes that feeling hungry by mid-morning is often a result of an unbalanced breakfast. Many common breakfasts are high in carbohydrates but lack the protein and fiber necessary for sustained fullness. Goble recommends a ‘breakfast check’ involving three questions: ‘Where is the protein?’, ‘Where is the fiber?’, and ‘Will this actually keep me full until lunch?’. Incorporating protein to slow digestion and fiber to add volume can help maintain stable energy levels throughout the morning.
