Nutrition and dietary choices for improved sleep

Scientific research suggests that certain dietary choices may support the sleep-wake cycle. Gary L. Wenk, a professor at Ohio State University, notes that while the link between nutrition and sleep requires more study, specific nutrients play a role.

Tryptophan, an essential amino acid used to produce serotonin and melatonin, is key to regulating sleep. Consuming tryptophan-rich foods—such as milk, chicken, fish, eggs, pumpkin seeds, legumes, peanuts, cheese, and leafy greens—alongside simple carbohydrates may assist its transport to the brain via insulin secretion. Additionally, foods like bananas, almonds, walnuts, and pistachios provide magnesium, which is linked to relaxation and sleep regulation.
