Nutrition and vitamins for maintaining health after age 60

As the body undergoes metabolic changes during aging, maintaining muscle mass and bone density becomes increasingly important. Nutrition plays a critical role in preventing muscle loss in individuals over 60.

Protein intake is essential for muscle maintenance and regeneration. Cottage cheese is highlighted as a high-quality source of casein, a slow-digesting protein that provides a sustained release of amino acids. Because casein forms a gel-like substance in the stomach, it is particularly effective for long-term satiety and muscle support.

In addition to protein, specific vitamins are vital for elderly health. Endocrinologist Dr. Florence Comite notes that Vitamin D is crucial for bone, muscle, and nervous system function, as well as immune support. Vitamin K2 is also recommended, often in conjunction with Vitamin D, to ensure proper calcium utilization and deposition in the bones.
