Nutrition experts advise caution regarding sugar and processed ingredients in treats
Nutrition experts are advising consumers to be cautious regarding the ingredients in popular treats like ice cream and processed sweets. Dietitian Betül Merd warns that ice cream is not inherently light just because it is cold. She emphasizes the importance of reading labels to distinguish between products made with milk, yogurt, or cream and those containing high amounts of glucose, fructose syrup, vegetable oils, and artificial flavorings.
Merd also clarified that the rate at which ice cream melts is not a definitive indicator of its healthiness, as melting behavior is influenced by fat content, milk proteins, stabilizers, and production technology. Furthermore, labels such as ‘fit’, ‘light’, or ‘fruit-flavored’ do not automatically guarantee a healthy product.
To manage sugar cravings without relying on refined sugar, experts suggest using natural alternatives. Fresh and dried fruits like apples, bananas, and dates provide fiber and vitamins that help stabilize blood sugar. Other natural options include honey and molasses, though portion control remains necessary due to high calorie content. Spices like cinnamon can also help balance blood sugar and reduce the perceived need for added sugar.
