Nutrition experts advocate shellfish benefits and cholesterol‑friendly diet

Clinical nutritionist Darija Vranešić Bender of KBC Zagreb explains that shellfish are among the most nutrient‑dense marine foods. A 100‑gram portion provides only 40–80 kcal, high‑quality protein containing all essential amino acids, omega‑3 fatty acids, and minerals such as vitamin B12, iron, zinc and selenium, making them suitable for Mediterranean diets and weight‑management plans.

Dr. Svetlana Stanišić warns that many people consume cholesterol‑raising foods without awareness. She recommends four dietary strategies: increase intake of oat β‑glucan (e.g., homemade oatmeal), add legumes, seeds, walnuts and almonds for plant sterols, avoid margarine that contains hydrogenated oils which can raise cholesterol up to six times more than butter, and incorporate garlic, olive oil, blue‑fish and cautious use of supplements to support healthy cholesterol levels.
