Nutrition experts emphasize food quality over calorie counting for weight loss

Experts warn that successful weight management requires looking beyond simple calorie counting to focus on food quality and psychological impacts. Nutritionist Doroteja Riahi notes that weight loss efforts can shift from a temporary goal to a defining identity, potentially leading to a cycle of moving goalposts where individuals constantly seek more muscle or less fat even after reaching their initial targets.

Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) highlights the importance of food composition. Studies show that participants consuming ultra-processed foods averaged approximately 500 more calories per day than those on minimally processed diets. While an energy deficit is necessary for weight loss, prioritizing protein, fiber, and minimally processed foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can better manage satiety and long-term sustainability.
