Nutrition experts suggest breakfast choices for longevity
Dr. Caroline Cohen, an adjunct professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Alabama, suggests that breakfast plays a vital role in healthy aging, cognitive function, and heart health.
To support brain health and prevent cognitive decline, Dr. Cohen recommends incorporating foods rich in flavonoids and omega-3 fatty acids. Berries are highlighted for their ability to improve blood flow to the brain and prevent memory loss, while walnuts provide omega-3s that help reduce inflammation.
Additionally, consuming protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass during aging. Recommended protein sources include yogurt, eggs, and tofu. Rather than making radical dietary changes that might lead to skipping meals, Dr. Cohen advises making small, sustainable adjustments, such as swapping a banana for berries or alternating between whole-grain toast and oatmeal.
