Nutrition experts urge egg consumption to combat malnutrition in Nigeria
Nutrition and animal science experts are urging Nigerian households to increase egg consumption to combat child malnutrition and stunted growth. During a public enlightenment programme in Ilorin, Kwara State, held to mark the 30th anniversary of World Egg Day, specialists highlighted that eggs provide essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals necessary for physical and brain development.
Victoria Chimezie, an animal geneticist from the University of Ilorin, addressed concerns regarding malnutrition in hospitals and challenged the misconception that consuming eggs automatically leads to elevated blood cholesterol levels. Samuel Akanbi, Chairman of the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (Kwara State Branch), also emphasized the role of eggs in providing energy and supporting general well-being.
To improve accessibility amidst rising food prices, the experts called on the Federal Government to subsidize poultry production inputs, such as animal feed and day-old chicks, to lower costs for consumers.
