Nutrition guidance on high protein products and daily requirements
The prevalence of ‘high protein’ labeled products in grocery stores has increased, targeting consumers interested in weight loss and fitness. Under European Union regulations, a product can be labeled ‘high protein’ if at least 20% of its energy value comes from protein. However, this designation does not necessarily mean a product is healthier, lower in calories, or less processed, as it does not account for sugar, fat, or salt content.
For a healthy adult, the recommended protein intake according to 2024 Polish nutritional standards is approximately 0.83 to 0.9 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. While protein is essential for tissue regeneration, muscle maintenance, and hormone production, higher amounts may be required for individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, performing intense physical labor, or recovering from illness. Experts suggest prioritizing protein from whole food sources such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and legumes rather than relying solely on processed protein supplements and snacks.
