Nutrition initiatives launched in Cuba and Peru to combat anemia
Health authorities and international organizations are implementing multi-sectoral strategies to combat anemia and improve maternal and child nutrition in Cuba and Peru.
In Cuba, the World Food Programme (WFP) is executing a nutrition project targeting vulnerable populations in the Holguín and Mayabeque provinces. The initiative focuses on children up to 11 years old, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. The program includes the distribution of prenatal and nutritional supplements, such as micronutrient powders for children under two, and involves training local teams to monitor anthropometric indicators like weight, height, and body mass index.
In Peru, the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) is leading a multisectoral effort to reduce childhood anemia. Minister Maritza Canales is coordinating with the ministries of Housing, Production, and Agrarian Development and Irrigation to address the root causes of malnutrition. This collaborative approach includes improving access to safe water and sanitation, promoting iron-rich food consumption through programs like ‘A Comer Pescado’, and providing technical assistance to small agricultural producers to increase the supply of nutritious foods.
