Nutrition strategies for sustainable weight loss

To achieve sustainable weight loss, experts suggest avoiding extreme measures like skipping meals or completely eliminating carbohydrates. Instead, replacing refined starches with fiber-rich alternatives is recommended to maintain muscle mass and nutritional balance, particularly for middle-aged and elderly individuals.

Key foods that support weight management include legumes, whole grain oats, corn, corn bread, brown rice, and buckwheat. Legumes such as black beans, red beans, mung beans, and chickpeas are highlighted as highly effective because they provide a combination of carbohydrates, plant protein, and fiber, which promotes satiety and slows digestion. However, it is advised to consume them boiled or steamed rather than in sugary or fried preparations.

Whole grain oats are also noted for their high beta-glucan content, a soluble fiber that creates viscosity in the digestive tract, helping to induce a feeling of fullness and slow digestion.
