Nutritional benefits and consumption of dates

Dates are a nutrient-dense food source that provides quick energy, making them suitable as snacks for athletes or during long journeys. While they contain high levels of sugar—comprising 60 to 70 percent of their composition—and approximately 295 calories per 100 grams, they also offer significant health benefits.

These fruits are rich in dietary fiber, with Medjool varieties containing about 6.7 percent and Deglet Nour varieties containing up to 9 percent. They provide essential minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium, along with vitamins A, B1, and B2. Additionally, dates contain polyphenols, which act as antioxidants to help inhibit inflammation and protect cells from oxidative stress.

For general daily consumption, it is recommended to limit intake to a maximum of three dates per day, though athletes under high physical exertion may consume four to five. Consumers should be aware that excessive consumption may cause bloating.
