Nutritional benefits and dietary uses of sunflower seeds
Sunflower seeds are highly nutritious, containing protein, fiber, vitamin E, B vitamins, and essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, calcium, and zinc. They also provide healthy unsaturated fats, including omega-6 and monounsaturated fats, which may support heart health and cholesterol management through the presence of phytosterols.
According to Devia Gopal, a consultant dietitian and nutritionist at Manipal Hospital in Bangalore, sunflower seeds can be consumed raw or roasted. While they offer significant health benefits, they are not a substitute for medical treatments for diabetes, high blood pressure, or cholesterol.
When incorporating them into a diet, it is recommended to avoid varieties with excessive salt due to their high energy and fat content. Major global producers of sunflower crops include Russia, China, India, the United States, and Turkey.
