Nutritional benefits and health risks of peanut consumption
Peanuts serve as a significant source of plant protein, unsaturated fats, fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and vitamin E. According to Dr. Ngô Đức Phương, Director of the Institute of Traditional Medicine, peanuts provide high-quality nutrition, particularly through oleic and linoleic acids, which may help reduce cardiovascular risks when consumed in moderation.
However, certain groups must exercise caution. Individuals with peanut allergies face severe risks, including hives, swelling, abdominal pain, and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis characterized by difficulty breathing and low blood pressure. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that allergic reactions can progress rapidly, necessitating immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.
Additionally, people with chronic kidney disease should limit peanut consumption due to the high levels of potassium and phosphorus contained in the nuts, which can be problematic when kidney function is significantly impaired.
