Nutritional benefits of breakfast for metabolism and brain health

Nutrition experts emphasize the importance of breakfast for cognitive function, metabolic health, and muscle maintenance, particularly for individuals over the age of 50.

Dietitians suggest consuming breakfast within one to two hours of waking to align with natural cortisol peaks. This timing can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. For older adults, who may face declining insulin sensitivity and anabolic resistance, starting the day with a protein-rich meal is recommended to support muscle mass and stabilize energy levels.

Nutritional quality is also critical. High-quality carbohydrates, such as whole grains, oats, and groats, are preferred over sugary cereals or processed snacks. These foods have a low glycemic index and high fiber content, providing sustained energy and preventing hunger spikes. Combining protein with fiber can further slow digestion and assist in appetite control throughout the morning.
