Nutritional density of modern crops remains stable despite social media claims

Claims circulating on social media regarding a drastic loss of nutrients in modern agricultural products are not a verified or generalized reality. While some historical analyses show specific variations in the concentration of certain elements, scientific evidence does not support the idea of a widespread nutritional deficiency that threatens the value of fresh produce.

Some studies have noted decreases in specific minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and copper, as well as vitamins like C and B2, and in some cases, protein. However, other research highlights nutritional improvements in certain crops. Juan Revenga, an expert from the Universidad Internacional de Valencia, suggests that a possible explanation for these variations is the ‘dilution effect,’ where crop varieties selected for higher yields produce more biomass but may not maintain the same proportion of micronutrients as previous varieties.

Experts advise that these findings should be interpreted with caution and do not mean that modern fruits and vegetables lack nutritional value. Instead, the focus should remain on maintaining a high-quality, varied diet.
