Nutritional health and food innovation focus on long-term well-being
Nutritional health and food innovation are critical factors for long-term well-being. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has set the theme for World Food Day 2026 as “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” emphasizing the need to combine science and technology with inclusive approaches to ensure food security and quality.
In Portugal, nutritional challenges persist, with over half of the adult population overweight and more than one-third of children aged 5 to 14 also facing excess weight. Beyond general weight management, dietary habits significantly impact organ health, particularly the liver.
To prevent conditions such as hepatic steatosis (fatty liver disease), health organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) recommend diets based on minimally processed foods, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Limiting sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats is essential for maintaining metabolic functions and preventing metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes.
