Nutritional impact and digestive effects of tomato consumption

Consuming tomatoes on an empty stomach may cause abdominal pain, heartburn, and heaviness due to tannins and organic acids irritating the gastrointestinal mucous membrane. To mitigate this, it is recommended to eat them later in the day or pair them with bread and fats.

Despite potential irritation when eaten alone, tomatoes are nutrient-dense. A medium tomato (approximately 170g) contains about 476 mg of potassium, 2g of fiber, and 39 mg of vitamin C. The antioxidant lycopene is more effectively absorbed when tomatoes are cooked, chopped, and consumed with fat.

Observational data from the PREDIMED study involving over 7,000 older adults suggested that daily consumption of more than 110g of tomatoes was associated with a 36% lower risk of developing hypertension compared to lower consumption levels. While the World Health Organization recommends at least 400g of fruits and vegetables daily, dietary variety is encouraged.
