Nutritional requirements for women across life stages

Nutritional requirements for women fluctuate significantly across different life stages, including the menstrual cycle, menopause, and breastfeeding.

During the menstrual cycle, specific nutrients and lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress management, and physical activity play a role in hormonal health. In menopause, changes in metabolism and body composition necessitate targeted nutritional strategies, with an emphasis on proteins, calcium, iron, vitamin D, and phytoestrogens.

For breastfeeding mothers, energy requirements increase by approximately 500 kilocalories per day. There is also a heightened need for specific micronutrients, including vitamins A, E, C, and B-complex, as well as minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, iron, iodine, selenium, and zinc. While the German Nutrition Society (DGE) provides reference values for these needs, consumer protection agencies recommend meeting increased requirements through a balanced diet rather than supplements, noting that excessive iodine intake can impact thyroid function.
