Nutritional strategies for balanced meals and blood sugar control

Maintaining a balanced diet involves both the selection of nutritious ingredients and the strategic order in which they are consumed. A balanced meal should ideally include protein (meat, fish, eggs, or tofu), fiber from vegetables, and carbohydrates.

To assist with blood sugar management and satiety, experts suggest a specific eating sequence: start with fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, beans, or whole grains, followed by proteins like poultry, fish, or tofu, and conclude with carbohydrates. This method can slow digestion and carbohydrate absorption.

Following principles from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a recommended plate composition consists of approximately 1/2 vegetables and fruits, 1/4 protein, and 1/4 high-quality carbohydrates. While the order of consumption is a helpful tool, it should complement, rather than replace, an overall healthy diet and appropriate portion control.
