Nutritional strategies for managing psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 2-3% of the global population. While there is no definitive cure, research indicates that nutritional strategies can influence the course of the disease by mitigating systemic inflammation and reducing the frequency or intensity of flare-ups.

An anti-inflammatory diet is recommended to manage symptoms. Key dietary components include seasonal fruits and vegetables, fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as mackerel, sardines, and salmon), legumes, whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, and nuts or seeds. Conversely, patients are advised to limit or avoid pro-inflammatory foods, including refined sugars, ultra-processed foods, and trans fats.

Medical experts emphasize that skin, hair, and nails are interconnected and reflect internal nutritional status. A diet high in refined products can lead to deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals. Specifically, B-group vitamins—such as B6, B9, and B12—are vital for metabolic processes and nervous system maintenance. While dietary adjustments serve as a complementary approach to dermatological treatments, they are essential for supporting overall skin health from within.
