Nutritional studies link avocado and blackcurrant to improved heart health

Recent nutritional studies have highlighted the potential cardiovascular benefits of specific foods. Researchers from Penn State University's Department of Nutritional Sciences conducted a study involving 786 adults with increased waist circumferences. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, found that daily consumption of one avocado for six months was associated with a reduction of 49 nanomoles per liter in LDL particles. Researchers estimate this reduction could correspond to approximately a four percent lower risk of heart disease.

Separately, a meta-analysis of 15 studies suggests that concentrated extracts of New Zealand blackcurrant may influence fat oxidation and vascular health. Findings indicated that daily intake of the extract could increase fat burning during exercise by an average of 28 percent and increase fat oxidation by 20 percent even during rest. The research also noted potential improvements in arterial stiffness and insulin sensitivity, though experts emphasize these results pertain to concentrated extracts rather than whole fruit consumption alone.
