Nutritionists advise avoiding certain foods before exercise
Nutritionists advise limiting the consumption of foods high in fat, protein, and fiber immediately before exercising to prevent digestive issues such as stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and urgent bowel movements.
According to nutritionist Yasi Ansari, during physical activity, blood flow is diverted from the digestive system to the working muscles, which limits the body's ability to process food. Sports nutritionist Amy Stephens adds that these specific nutrients slow down the digestion process; if consumed too close to a workout, food may remain in the stomach during activity, causing discomfort.
High-fiber foods like cabbage, large salads, beans, and bran cereals are specifically noted for potentially causing excess gas and bloating. For energy, experts recommend easily digestible carbohydrates such as bananas, toast with jam, oatmeal, rice cakes, granola bars, or fruit smoothies, ideally consumed approximately 30 minutes before exercise.
