Nutritionists warn against common breakfast foods that cause weight gain
Certain breakfast choices perceived as healthy can lead to unexpected weight gain and negative health impacts, such as spikes in blood sugar and damage to the cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems.
One problematic option is oatmeal combined with excessive dried fruits and sugar. While oatmeal is high in fiber, adding high-sugar ingredients like ripe bananas, brown sugar, or dried fruits can cause a meal to exceed 500 calories of carbohydrates. This rapid carbohydrate intake triggers insulin spikes, which can inhibit fat burning and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, concentrated sugars in dried fruit can accelerate skin aging by depleting collagen.
Another issue involves coffee consumed with added sugar, condensed milk, or cream. While black coffee provides antioxidants and caffeine to aid alertness, adding fats and sugars turns it into a source of empty calories. Nutritionist Dr. Lisa Young notes that coffee with heavy cream and milk is a primary driver of increased body fat.
