NVE introduces new reporting requirements for Midt-Norge hydropower producers

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has announced a new reporting scheme for hydropower producers in Midt-Norge. This measure is a response to exceptionally low water levels in regional reservoirs, which have fallen below the minimum levels seen in the last 20 years due to drought and low snow accumulation.

Midt-Norge typically relies on power imports to meet consumption. The low reservoir levels increase the need for imports, creating uncertainty regarding weather conditions and import availability. Under the new scheme, producers will be required to report relevant data and forecasts to Statnett, which will then relay the information to NVE to ensure better oversight of water resource management and energy security.

Inga Nordberg, director of the energy and licensing department at NVE, stated that producers must account for uncertain import possibilities and weather conditions when planning production. While southern Norway also faces low reservoir levels, it maintains a power surplus and high transmission capacity. NVE noted that if the situation warrants it, the reporting scheme may be extended to other price areas.
