NVIDIA and AMD advance ray tracing and GPU memory technologies
Major GPU manufacturers are advancing technologies to optimize ray tracing and manage high-density geometry. NVIDIA has released version 2.0 of its RTX Mega Geometry SDK, which enables the streaming of organized clusters at various levels of detail. This technique allows engines to dynamically select appropriate detail levels, reducing VRAM usage and improving frame rates. The upcoming title Gears of War: E-Day is expected to be among the first to utilize this updated technology.
Simultaneously, AMD is exploring methods to reduce VRAM consumption during ray tracing. Research led by AMD Fellow Holger Gruen details the use of tetrahedral cages to significantly reduce Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) memory usage, a critical data structure used to accelerate ray tracing processes.
Regarding future hardware, rumors suggest that NVIDIA’s next-generation GeForce RTX 60 series, potentially based on the Rubin architecture, may not arrive until 2028. While the Rubin platform was introduced as an AI and data center solution, leaks indicate that gaming-focused GR20x GPUs may face a delayed release compared to earlier 2027 projections.
