NVIDIA and UW Institute for Protein Design launch RFD4-Proteina AI model

NVIDIA and the University of Washington (UW) Institute for Protein Design have introduced RFD4-Proteina, an open-source generative AI model designed to advance protein design and drug discovery. Built on the NVIDIA BioNeMo platform, the model combines programmable protein design with search capabilities, allowing researchers to refine protein sequences and structures alongside interacting molecules.

Developers report that RFD4-Proteina achieves five-to-ten times higher design success rates and generates protein candidates five to ten times faster than previous models. The model has demonstrated superior performance in benchmarks involving protein binding, small-molecule binding, enzyme scaffolding, and DNA binding. Potential applications include designing proteins to interrupt disease processes or enhancing diagnostic tests.

Beyond protein design, NVIDIA is collaborating with various healthcare organizations to integrate AI into clinical settings. Siemens Healthineers is utilizing NVIDIA intelligence for adaptive radiotherapy to improve personalized cancer care through patient-specific simulation and robotic control. Other life sciences companies, including Danaher and Thera Biosciences, are using the BioNeMo platform to develop scientific agents that connect drug design with autonomous laboratory discovery.
