Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft now represent over 21% of S&P 500
The S&P 500 index is experiencing unprecedented levels of concentration, with three technology giants—Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft—now accounting for more than 21% of the entire index. This level of dominance exceeds the historical peaks of companies like IBM and ExxonMobil in the mid-1980s.
Nvidia has emerged as a primary driver of market growth, bolstered by its leadership in artificial intelligence chip design. The company recently announced a $150 billion stock buyback plan, bringing its total authorization to $235 billion. Analysts from Goldman Sachs and FactSet suggest that Nvidia and Micron could account for more than one-third of the S&P 500's earnings per share growth this quarter.
Micron has already reported significant momentum, posting record quarterly revenue of $54.23 billion in late September. Meanwhile, the broader market shows strong performance, with the S&P 500 expected to see a 29.5% year-on-year earnings growth for the third quarter. Despite this growth, some market indicators show divergence, such as increased selling of S&P 500 futures by non-commercial actors.
