Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejects AI existential risk and calls for lab closures if safety is unproven

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed concerns regarding an existential threat from artificial intelligence, stating the probability of AI causing a world-ending scenario in the near future is zero percent. Huang characterized doomsday predictions as irresponsible and unscientific.

Addressing the debate over AI safety and regulation, Huang argued that companies should not seek exemptions from existing antitrust or product liability laws. He emphasized that if an AI laboratory cannot effectively contain its experiments or ensure that models align with safety standards, the responsible course of action is to shut the laboratory down rather than requesting regulatory pauses. Huang framed AI safety primarily as an engineering challenge involving rigorous verification, isolation, and monitoring.

In contrast to some industry leaders like Anthropic's Dario Amodei, who have advocated for slowing development to manage risks, Huang suggested that current laws are sufficient to hold companies accountable for unsafe products. He noted that Nvidia focuses heavily on verification, with approximately 80 percent of its work dedicated to that area, and suggested that the industry must prioritize safety through engineering excellence and legal accountability.
