Micron Technology and memory chip sector see rally driven by AI demand
Micron Technology and the broader memory semiconductor sector are experiencing a significant rally, fueled by robust demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Market optimism has been bolstered by strong financial results from South Korean rival SK Hynix, which reported a massive increase in operating profit and projected that memory chip demand will outstrip supply through 2030.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has also expressed confidence in the sector, stating he sees no signs of memory demand fading through 2029. This sentiment is supported by the increasing need for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to power GPU clusters and AI accelerators in data centers.
To secure its supply chain, Micron has entered a strategic agreement with Indium Corp to expand refining and production capabilities at its Rome, New York site. This move is part of a broader effort to secure critical minerals necessary for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. While some analysts caution against volatility and cyclicality, major institutions like Bank of America have maintained positive outlooks on Micron, citing the long-term growth potential of the AI-driven memory market.
