Nvidia dominates AI chip market with massive revenue growth

Nvidia has transitioned from a company serving gamers to a dominant force in the artificial intelligence chip market. Its rapid growth has significant macroeconomic implications, as its market capitalization now accounts for approximately 8% of the S&P 500 index.

Quarterly revenues have surged from under $10 billion at the start of 2022 to nearly $100 billion. While Nvidia currently holds about a 60% market share, this figure may decline to 50% by the end of the decade due to the rise of custom silicon, where companies design their own specialized chips.

The company is also deeply integrated into the infrastructure of its clients. For instance, Nvidia has invested $30 billion in OpenAI and is supporting OpenAI’s massive data center project in Ohio by providing 20-year guarantees for land leases and electricity supplies. These guarantees facilitate easier access to loans for chip purchases and ensure the project remains viable for other users if necessary.
