Nvidia explores deal with Reflection AI to expand model capabilities

Nvidia is reportedly in early-stage discussions regarding a potential deal with Reflection AI, an artificial intelligence startup founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou.

According to reports from the Financial Times and other outlets, Nvidia is considering several strategic options, including a full acquisition, increasing its existing financial stake, or an “acqui-hire.” In an acqui-hire scenario, Nvidia would hire Reflection AI's staff and license its technology rather than conducting a full corporate merger, a move that could help bypass lengthy antitrust regulatory reviews.

Nvidia has already established a significant relationship with the startup, having reportedly invested approximately $800 million to date. Reflection AI was recently seeking new financing at a pre-money valuation of $25 billion. The startup has gained attention for its focus on open-weight models, specifically its recently released Beam model, which is a mixture-of-experts model featuring 501 billion parameters designed to compete with low-cost Chinese AI systems.

While negotiations are ongoing and could potentially reach an agreement within weeks, sources note that the talks are preliminary and could also fail to result in a deal.
