NVIDIA faces surging AI chip demand and export control challenges
NVIDIA is navigating a complex global landscape marked by surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and significant regulatory challenges. CEO Jensen Huang stated that the company expects chip sales volume in 2027 to double compared to current levels, driven by massive investments from governments and businesses worldwide. Despite this growth, supply constraints, particularly in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), remain a critical bottleneck.
Simultaneously, NVIDIA faces difficulties enforcing U.S. export restrictions on high-end AI chips to China. An investigation by C4ADS revealed that billions of dollars worth of restricted GPUs are entering the Chinese market through complex intermediary networks. These methods include routing hardware through Chinese research institutes and universities, utilizing Southeast Asian shipping routes, and employing companies with opaque ownership structures to bypass trade controls.
