Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion
Nvidia has announced an agreement to acquire the artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face for approximately $12.9 billion. The deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2027, includes roughly $11.9 billion for stockholders and up to $1 billion in equity-based retention awards for employees.
Hugging Face serves as a central hub for the open-source AI ecosystem, hosting over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and approximately 1 million applications for more than 18 million developers. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem, supporting open-source and open-weight models from all developers.
The acquisition is expected to face regulatory scrutiny in Paris and Brussels, with discussions regarding the application of the EU AI Act. While the deal is primarily being negotiated in the United States, Hugging Face has significant European roots, with its founders being French and approximately half of its workforce based in Paris.
This move follows Nvidia's massive expansion in the AI sector, with the company's equity investments in AI firms reaching $99 billion as of July 2026. Additionally, Nvidia has projected approximately 70% revenue growth for fiscal 2028.
