SpaceX seeks $40 billion to finance Nvidia AI chip purchases

SpaceX is reportedly in negotiations to secure approximately $40 billion in financing to purchase Nvidia AI chips and expand its computing infrastructure. The proposed funding package is expected to consist of $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the transaction, with investment firms such as Pimco also involved in discussions.

The financing aims to support the expansion of SpaceX’s AI capabilities, specifically for its xAI division and the Colossus 2 data center. Elon Musk has stated that the company intends to build exclusively on Nvidia hardware, citing the Vera Rubin architecture as the superior option. Musk also noted that the number of Nvidia chips in the Colossus 2 cluster could more than double by the end of the year.

Financial analysts have raised questions regarding the structure of this deal. Some observers have characterized the arrangement as a circular money loop, noting that Nvidia holds a significant stake in SpaceX and is also part of a Wall Street consortium helping to provide the financing for its own customers. This massive scale of borrowing reflects a broader trend in the AI sector, where Morgan Stanley estimates that AI infrastructure could require $1.5 trillion in external financing by 2028.
