Nvidia negotiating $250 billion guarantee for OpenAI’s $500 billion Ohio AI data centre

Nvidia is in talks to provide a financing guarantee of about $250 billion for OpenAI’s planned AI data‑centre campus in southern Ohio. The project, developed by SoftBank‑owned SB Energy on the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site, is expected to have a total cost exceeding $500 billion and a power capacity of 10 GW. The first phase, roughly 800 MW, is slated to be operational by 2028. The guarantee would back the lease and construction debt for the 10 GW campus but would not cover the Nvidia GPUs themselves; a separate financing arrangement of up to $350 billion for the hardware is also being discussed. Because OpenAI is not yet profitable and lacks an investment‑grade credit rating, the guarantee is intended to reassure lenders. The U.S. Department of Energy plans at least 9.2 GW of natural‑gas generation and transmission upgrades to supply the site.
