Nvidia research highlights importance of AI agent harnesses

New research from Nvidia suggests that the ‘harness’—the software scaffolding surrounding an AI model—is more critical than the underlying model itself for executing long-horizon tasks. While the model acts as the brain, the harness serves as the agentic runtime, managing memory, context, tool execution, and safety guardrails.

In testing, researchers utilized a custom harness featuring a supervisor component to assist Claude Opus 5. This configuration allowed the model to achieve a 100% score on the ARC-AGI-3 interactive reasoning benchmark, compared to a 30% score when operating without the harness.

The harness manages essential functions such as conversation history, tool orchestration, and state continuity. This runtime-first approach aims to solve the challenge of AI models losing focus or making errors during complex, multi-step processes that require stringing many decisions together over extended periods.
