Nvidia expands into AI infrastructure financing and adjusts OpenAI project backing
Nvidia is expanding its role from a hardware provider to a central player in AI infrastructure financing. The company has partnered with major financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and KKR, to establish platforms aimed at mobilizing over $500 billion in third-party capital for AI compute. CEO Jensen Huang characterized the move by stating, “In AI, compute is revenue,” suggesting that high-performance chips can serve as reliable collateral for lenders.
Simultaneously, Nvidia is adjusting its financial involvement in a massive 10-gigawatt data center project for OpenAI in Pike County, Ohio. Developed by SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy, the project is expected to be one of the largest ever announced. Nvidia is reportedly scaling back its initial financial guarantee for the project from a previously discussed $250 billion to less than $120 billion, a move intended to address investor concerns regarding the company's risk exposure.
Beyond infrastructure, Nvidia has also strengthened its ties to the broader AI ecosystem through significant investments. The company disclosed a stake in SpaceX, holding approximately 123 million shares valued at roughly $21 billion at the end of June.
