Moderna shares hit four-year high on cancer vaccine news

Moderna shares reached a four-year high, climbing approximately 14% to $225 following reports of a major initiative to accelerate cancer vaccine development. The surge is driven by news of a planned public-private partnership involving the National Institutes of Health (NIH), research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies, modeled after the collaborative efforts used during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is expected to launch in December.

In addition to the vaccine news, Moderna is rejoining the Nasdaq-100 index, replacing Warner Bros. Discovery. This move is expected to drive further institutional demand. While Bank of America raised its price target for Moderna to $200 from $170, it maintained a ‘Neutral’ rating, reflecting a cautious outlook despite the stock's significant momentum.

The progress in mRNA technology for oncology has also positively impacted other biotech firms, including Pfizer, BioNTech, and Merck.
