Nvidia sustainability executive confronted by student over AI climate impact

During a Climate Week NYC panel on September 23, student protesters disrupted a discussion featuring Nvidia’s head of sustainability, Josh Parker, to protest the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence.

One student specifically confronted Parker, alleging that the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and the resulting water and energy consumption are contributing to droughts in India. The protester stated, “Parker, shame on you! My family in India are dying from drought because of you. How many more people are going to die?”

The demonstration highlighted growing concerns regarding the electricity and water requirements of the data centers used to power AI systems. In response to energy concerns, Parker announced the formation of an AI Energy Management Coalition involving Nvidia, OpenAI, and other technology firms to address the sector's increasing power needs.
