Nvidia to Back OpenAI with $250 B Financing for Ohio AI Data Center
Nvidia is in talks to provide up to a $250 billion financing guarantee that would help OpenAI lease and fund a planned 10‑gigawatt artificial‑intelligence data‑center campus in southern Ohio. The facility is being developed by SoftBank’s energy subsidiary on federal land and is estimated to cost more than $500 billion in total, including the AI chips that will be installed.
The guarantee would cover the data‑center lease and related debt financing but would not include the Nvidia chips themselves. Nvidia is also discussing a separate financing arrangement for OpenAI’s chip purchases that could total up to $350 billion. The first phase of the project is slated for completion in 2028 with an initial power capacity of about 800 megawatts. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reported to be involved in decisions about the allocation of power, which is controlled by the U.S. government, while Japan is contributing roughly $33 billion to a natural‑gas power plant that will supply the site.
