Nvidia to Provide $2.5 trillion Guarantee for OpenAI Ohio AI Data Center

Nvidia is negotiating a financing guarantee of roughly $2.5 trillion for OpenAI to lease a 10‑gigawatt AI data center being built in southern Ohio by SoftBank’s energy subsidiary. The project, owned by Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank, is expected to cost more than $5 trillion when chip expenditures are included. Power for the site will be supplied by the U.S. government, while Japan will contribute about $33 billion under a recent trade agreement. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is directly involved in deciding which AI firms receive allocations of the electricity. The first construction phase is slated for completion in 2028 with an initial capacity of around 800 megawatts, after which the site will expand toward its full 10‑gigawatt output. Nvidia has already invested $30 billion in OpenAI and is discussing additional financing for chip purchases that could total up to $3.5 trillion.
