NVIDIA unveils near‑zero‑water cooling for AI data centers
NVIDIA announced a new liquid‑cooling system for its next‑generation AI data centers that aims to eliminate the water traditionally used for cooling. By circulating warm liquid (about 45 °C) directly around the hardware and pairing it with dry‑cooler radiators, the design could cut water consumption from roughly 2.6 million gallons per megawatt‑year to almost zero in temperate climates. The move targets rising scrutiny over the high water footprints of AI‑intensive facilities, especially in regions facing shortages.
The technology does not address all sources of water use associated with AI, such as electricity generation, semiconductor manufacturing, or construction, and performance may decline in extremely hot locations where supplemental cooling remains necessary. In Europe, the rollout coincides with stricter water‑efficiency regulations, including French laws that require large data centers to report water usage and impose fines for non‑compliance.
